Chemical Product Description & Applications
Dichloromethane, also called methylene chloride, is a volatile chlorinated solvent used in industrial dissolution, extraction and chemical processing. It dissolves a range of organic compounds and forms a separate phase from water, enabling selected liquid-liquid separations. Its low boiling point also allows solvent removal from suitable process streams after the required operation.
The technical liquid supplies process solvency rather than a reactive structural component. Commercial grades can contain different stabilizer systems and impurity profiles, which matter when the solvent contacts reactive intermediates or a sensitive product. A general industrial grade is distinct from separately controlled pharmaceutical-processing or specialty purity grades. Process use depends on compatibility with the material being dissolved or extracted.
Typical Applications
- Organic intermediate work-up: Used in selected chemical manufacturing processes to dissolve intermediates and support phase separation during work-up. The solvent carries the desired organic fraction before recovery or further processing.
- Industrial extraction processes: Used where differential solubility between an aqueous phase and an organic solvent phase is required. Its limited water miscibility permits separation of the solvent-rich layer.
- Specialty polymer and resin processing: Used in compatible industrial dissolution and formulation operations involving selected polymers or resins. Subsequent solvent removal leaves the intended solid or formulated material.
