DL-Menthol

DL-Menthol is synthetic racemic menthol used for a minty odor and cooling sensory effect in fragrance and personal-care formulations. It contains both enantiomers of the menthol stereoisomer pair. The characteristic cooling response and mint profile provide separate formulation functions in oral-care flavors, skin-care products and fragrance compositions.

The material can appear as a colorless to white crystalline or partially liquid mass depending on temperature. It has limited water solubility and is normally incorporated through a compatible solvent, oil or flavor phase. DL-menthol differs from optically active L-menthol in stereochemical composition, which is relevant when matching flavor strength, mint character and the cooling profile of an existing formulation.

Typical Applications

• Oral-care flavor systems: Used in flavor compounds for toothpaste and mouth-care products to contribute a recognizable mint note and cooling sensation. The flavor system carries the menthol into the aqueous or paste base.
• Cooling body-care products: Used in compatible body gels, lotions and foot-care formulations developed around a cooling sensory concept. The menthol is solubilized through the selected carrier rather than added as undissolved crystals.
• Mint fragrance accords: Used in fragrance concentrates to build fresh, minty character. It contributes a distinct sensory direction to the perfume composition before incorporation into the finished product.
