Glacial acetic acid

Glacial acetic acid is concentrated acetic acid used as a chemical feedstock, acidic process medium and solvent in industrial manufacture. Its carboxyl group forms acetate esters and other acetyl-related products. The acid also provides proton-donating capacity for chemical conversion and process adjustment, while its polar liquid character supports selected reaction media.

The term glacial describes the concentrated acid, which can crystallize near ordinary room temperatures when sufficiently pure. It is miscible with water, but dilution changes its concentration and process behavior substantially. Industrial glacial acetic acid is a raw material for downstream chemistry; it is distinct in commercial scope from food vinegar and from acetate salts supplied as buffering ingredients.

Typical Applications

• Vinyl acetate monomer manufacture: Used as a principal feedstock in VAM production. The resulting monomer is used downstream in polymer dispersions, adhesives and other vinyl-acetate-based materials.
• Acetate ester solvents: Used to manufacture esters such as ethyl acetate and butyl acetate with the corresponding alcohol feedstocks. These esters serve as solvents in coatings, inks and related industrial formulations.
• Acetic anhydride and acetyl chemistry: Used as a feedstock in industrial acetyl-intermediate production. The resulting intermediates supply acetyl groups for further conversion into specialty chemicals and polymer-related products.
