Melamine

Melamine is a nitrogen-rich triazine compound used mainly as a reactive raw material for amino resins. Its three amino groups react in condensation chemistry to produce crosslinked networks. The resulting resins contribute surface hardness, heat resistance and durable finish properties in wood-based panels, laminates and molded products.

The industrial powder is incorporated into resin manufacture rather than used as an inert substitute for the finished resin. Melamine-formaldehyde and melamine-urea-formaldehyde systems use the same monomer in different network compositions. The triazine structure supplies nitrogen and functionality, while the resin recipe and curing process establish water resistance, mechanical performance and surface quality in the final article.

Typical Applications

• Decorative laminate resins: Used to manufacture resins for impregnation of decorative papers and overlay sheets. Subsequent pressing and curing produce hard surfaces for furniture panels, countertops and flooring.
• Wood-panel adhesive resins: Used in melamine-containing amino-resin adhesives for selected plywood and other wood-based products. Incorporating melamine modifies the cured network and supports the required moisture-resistance profile.
• Molding compounds: Used as a feedstock for melamine resin molding materials. The resin is compounded with suitable fillers and additives before molding into rigid, heat-resistant articles.
