Melamine cyanurate is a nitrogen-rich flame-retardant additive formed from melamine and cyanuric acid. Under fire exposure, endothermic decomposition absorbs heat and produces gases that dilute combustible species. In suitable polyamide formulations, its effect on burning and melt behavior provides a halogen-free route to reduced flammability.
The selected fine powder is intended for unreinforced polyamide compounding. It is dispersed through the polymer melt rather than reacted into the polyamide backbone. Its effectiveness depends strongly on resin type, reinforcement and formulation, so behavior in unfilled nylon cannot simply be transferred to glass-fiber-reinforced grades. Particle distribution also matters because agglomeration can affect both processing and mechanical performance.
Typical Applications
Unreinforced PA6 and PA66 compounds: Used as a flame-retardant additive in suitable nylon formulations for electrical housings, connectors and other molded components.
Polyamide flame-retardant concentrates: Used in compatible masterbatch or concentrate manufacture to distribute the additive through subsequent nylon compounding operations.
