Triethyl phosphate

Triethyl phosphate is a low-viscosity organophosphate liquid used as an additive flame retardant, plasticizer and solvent. Its phosphorus content contributes to the fire-response chemistry of suitable formulations, while its liquid character assists blending and viscosity adjustment. These roles make it useful in polyurethane and other resin systems.

The selected material is the phosphate ester itself, not a preblended flame-retardant package. It can be mixed into compatible formulations before curing, where it remains an additive rather than supplying the reactive hydroxyl functionality of a polyol. Its contribution to fire behavior depends on the resin and other ingredients. Solvent power and plasticizing action can also influence processing, flexibility and retention in the finished material.

Typical Applications

• Rigid PUR and PIR insulation formulations: Used as a phosphorus-containing flame-retardant additive in appropriately designed rigid polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foam systems.
• Resin and coating formulations: Used in compatible polymer binders where combined plasticizing, solvency and phosphorus-based flame-retardant functions are useful.
• Specialty solvent blends: Used as a high-boiling polar solvent in suitable resin-processing and chemical-formulation applications.
