Clethodim

Clethodim is a cyclohexanedione herbicide active for selective post-emergence control of grasses. It inhibits acetyl-CoA carboxylase in susceptible grass plants, disrupting fatty-acid synthesis and growth at the meristems. Foliar uptake and movement toward growing points support control of actively growing annual grasses and selected perennial grasses in broadleaf cropping systems.

The technical active is generally handled as an oily liquid and formulated into emulsifiable or other liquid concentrates. It is a grass herbicide, so broadleaf weed and sedge control are not part of its inherent spectrum. Solvent choice, emulsifier package and adjuvant system determine how the finished concentrate disperses and deposits on grass foliage; these components are separate from the active raw material.

Typical Applications

• Grass-control products for broadleaf field crops: Used in post-emergence herbicides for susceptible grassy weeds in crops such as soybean, cotton and oilseed rape. Formulated clethodim allows grass control while preserving the broadleaf crop under the designated use pattern.
• Vegetable grass herbicides: Used in crop-specific formulations for control of emerged annual grasses in vegetable production. The application addresses competition from grass weeds where a broad-spectrum treatment would also damage the crop.
• Perennial grass treatment formulations: Used in products targeting designated perennial grasses through foliar uptake and movement into growing tissue. This application relies on the systemic behavior of clethodim rather than immediate surface scorch.
