Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate

Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate is an anionic surfactant that provides detergency, wetting and strong foam generation in cleaning products. Commercial alpha-olefin sulfonate contains related alkene sulfonates and hydroxyalkane sulfonates produced during manufacture. It is therefore a surfactant mixture with a defined chain range, rather than one pure molecular species.

The high-active solid grade is supplied as powder or beads for concentrated and low-water formulations. It can also be dissolved to prepare aqueous surfactant systems. Its sulfonate chemistry provides useful cleaning and foaming behavior across a broad formulation range, including hard-water conditions. AOS differs from sulfate-ester surfactants such as SLS or SLES and should not be described as the same ingredient.

Typical Applications

• Powder and concentrated detergents: Used to provide anionic detergency and foam in dry detergent blends and concentrated cleaning products. The solid format reduces the amount of carrier water introduced during manufacture.
• Foaming personal-care cleansers: Used in formulated shampoos, body cleansers and hand washes where an olefin sulfonate is selected as part of the cleansing system. Co-surfactants adjust the foam character and overall wash feel.
• Industrial foaming cleaners: Used in high-foam cleaning formulations for surfaces and equipment. Wetting and soil-dispersion functions help the cleaner contact the substrate while the foam supports visible coverage during application.
