Chemical Product Description & Applications
Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic flame-retardant filler used in polymers where a mineral water-release mechanism is required. On decomposition it absorbs heat and releases water vapor, helping cool the material and dilute combustible gases. The magnesium-oxide-rich residue adds a solid mineral barrier contribution after decomposition.
The selected fine powder is dispersed into polymer compounds rather than supplied as a neutralizing slurry. Its decomposition occurs at a higher temperature than that of aluminum hydroxide, allowing use in selected higher-temperature processing systems. Particle design and surface compatibility influence loading, dispersion and mechanical performance. Surface-treated versions are used where the compound requires a different balance of resin wetting and dispersion.
Typical Applications
- Halogen-free cable jackets: Used in compatible polyethylene, EVA and related cable compounds to provide mineral flame retardancy. The higher decomposition temperature allows formulation in systems whose processing conditions are unsuitable for ATH.
- Polypropylene flame-retardant compounds: Used in selected polypropylene formulations where a high mineral loading is feasible. It supplies endothermic decomposition and water release while the compound design manages flow and mechanical properties.
- Elastomer and engineering compound development: Used in suitable rubber and thermoplastic formulations requiring a halogen-free mineral flame-retardant system. Its role is the thermal and residue-forming contribution within the complete compound.
