1,2-Hexanediol

1,2-Hexanediol is a multifunctional cosmetic diol used as a humectant, solvent and support ingredient in product-protection systems. Its two adjacent hydroxyl groups associate with water, while the six-carbon structure gives it affinity for selected organic ingredients. This balance allows it to contribute moisture retention and assist incorporation of materials that are less compatible with water alone.

The neat liquid is commonly used in the aqueous or solvent phase of leave-on and rinse-off formulations. It can enhance the activity of an appropriately designed preservation system, but this contribution is separate from a stand-alone broad-spectrum preservative claim. Unlike a preblended protection package, single-ingredient 1,2-hexanediol gives the formulator independent control over the diol portion of the formula.

Typical Applications

• Facial serum and essence vehicles: Used as a co-solvent and humectant in water-rich facial treatments. It helps combine selected actives with the carrier while contributing a hydrated skin feel.
• Cream and lotion protection systems: Used alongside preservatives and other multifunctional ingredients in emulsions to support product protection. Its contribution is incorporated into the complete preservation design rather than treated as a finished preservation package.
• Water-based cosmetic dispersions: Used in compatible color-cosmetic and skin-care dispersions to adjust the liquid vehicle and support ingredient distribution. Its solvent and moisture-binding functions are useful where the formulation contains both water and organic components.
