Ethyl 8-bromooctanoate

Ethyl 8-bromooctanoate is a bifunctional haloester used to install a carboxyalkyl side chain. Its primary bromide provides the nucleophilic-substitution site, while the ethyl ester masks the terminal acid during chain attachment. The resulting product retains a defined octanoate skeleton that can be converted to the free acid or an appropriate salt.

The brominated end reacts with suitable nitrogen or oxygen nucleophiles, allowing the same protected acid chain to be connected through different heteroatoms. In Carsalam-based salicylamidoalkanoate chemistry, nitrogen alkylation installs the side chain before ring opening and ester hydrolysis. The selected reagent is the bromide specifically; it is a separate process input from the analogous chloroester, with its own reaction behavior.
