Isophorone diisocyanate

Isophorone diisocyanate is a cycloaliphatic diisocyanate used to manufacture polyurethane resins and crosslinker intermediates. Its two isocyanate groups react with hydroxyl-functional compounds to form urethane bonds, while its non-aromatic ring structure supports light-stable polyurethane chemistry. The two NCO groups have different reaction environments, which is useful in controlled resin synthesis.

The selected liquid is monomeric IPDI, not a ready-made blocked hardener or IPDI trimer. Reaction with suitable polyols produces prepolymers and polyurethane backbones; reaction with hydroxy-functional acrylates provides routes to urethane-acrylate oligomers. Its rigid cycloaliphatic fragment contributes to the mechanical profile of the resulting resin. Final flexibility, cure behavior and coating durability are established by the complete molecular design.

• Polyurethane coating-resin synthesis: Used as the diisocyanate building block for light-stable polyurethane binders, prepolymers and crosslinker derivatives.
• Polyurethane dispersions: Used in appropriate prepolymer routes to waterborne polyurethane binders for coatings and adhesive formulations.
• Urethane-acrylate oligomers: Used with suitable polyols and hydroxy-functional acrylates to manufacture radiation-curable oligomers combining urethane structure with acrylate reactivity.
