Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is a crystalline, water-soluble source of magnesium and sulfur for fertilizer manufacture and crop nutrition. Magnesium supports chlorophyll formation and photosynthetic activity, while sulfur supplies an essential component of sulfur-containing amino acids. Both nutrients are supplied in dissolved ionic form after the crystals dissolve, making the material suitable for liquid feeding systems as well as soluble fertilizer blends.

The seven waters of crystallization form part of the product mass, so its nutrient concentration differs from anhydrous magnesium sulfate and kieserite. The sulfate form supplies magnesium without adding nitrogen or chloride. It is normally incorporated through the aqueous nutrient phase; concentrated calcium-containing stock solutions can precipitate sulfate and are therefore commonly prepared separately.

Typical Applications

• Fertigation and hydroponic nutrients: Used in soluble feed recipes for greenhouse vegetables, berries and ornamentals to supply magnesium alongside the main NPK nutrients. Dissolution before injection allows the magnesium contribution to be distributed through irrigation water.
• Foliar magnesium fertilizers: Used as the magnesium and sulfur component in foliar feeding products for crops with a demonstrated magnesium requirement. The readily soluble crystals allow manufacturers to prepare a dissolved nutrient rather than a suspended mineral powder.
• Water-soluble fertilizer blends: Combined with compatible soluble fertilizer salts to produce magnesium-enriched crop feeds. This provides a separate magnesium contribution where the selected NPK raw materials do not supply enough of the nutrient.
