Strontium carbonate

Strontium carbonate is a white inorganic powder used as a strontium source in ferrites, ceramics and specialty glass. Thermal processing converts the carbonate contribution into the oxide-containing composition of the final material. In ferrite manufacture it supplies strontium for the magnetic crystal structure, while in glass and ceramic formulations it modifies the oxide balance and fired properties.

The solid is only sparingly soluble in water and is normally introduced as a particulate raw material or converted chemically before use. Particle distribution and impurity profile affect mixing and reaction behavior during firing. During firing, carbonate decomposition releases carbon dioxide and incorporates the strontium contribution into the developing oxide phases.

Typical Applications

• Strontium ferrite magnets: Used with iron-oxide-bearing raw materials to manufacture strontium ferrite powders and permanent magnets. The strontium source becomes part of the ferrite phase during thermal processing.
• Ceramic glazes and frits: Used to introduce strontium oxide into selected glaze and frit recipes. It contributes to the fired composition and can modify melting behavior and surface properties.
• Specialty glass batches: Used as a carbonate source of strontium in glass formulations. Decomposition during melting introduces the required oxide contribution into the glass network.
