Chemical Product Description & Applications
Aluminum hydroxide, often abbreviated ATH, is an inorganic flame-retardant filler used in polymer compounds. On heating it decomposes endothermically and releases water vapor, absorbing heat and diluting the combustible gases near the material. The remaining aluminum-oxide-rich residue provides an additional mineral barrier contribution, while the filler can help reduce smoke development in suitable formulations.
The selected grade is a fine, uncoated powder for dispersion into the polymer or resin phase. Its decomposition begins at a lower temperature than magnesium hydroxide, which makes processing temperature a defining application feature. Particle distribution and resin compatibility affect viscosity, filler loading and mechanical behavior. ATH supplies a mineral flame-retardant mechanism; the complete compound establishes fire classification and electrical or mechanical properties.
Typical Applications
- Halogen-free cable compounds: Used in suitable low-temperature-processed cable insulation and sheath compounds, including EVA-rich systems. The dispersed mineral provides heat absorption and water release when exposed to fire.
- Unsaturated polyester composites: Used in resin formulations for molded panels, cast products and other filled thermoset articles. It adds a flame-retardant mineral phase while also contributing filler volume and surface characteristics.
- Elastomeric and coating systems: Used in compatible rubber compounds, coatings and backing materials where the processing temperature permits ATH incorporation. It supports reduced flame propagation and smoke formation through its mineral decomposition mechanism.
