Magnesium chloride anhydrous

Anhydrous magnesium chloride is a magnesium-bearing salt used in dry molten-salt and metallurgical processes. It supplies magnesium ions for electrolytic magnesium production and forms part of chloride melt systems used in metal processing. Its lack of crystal water differentiates it from the hydrated flakes commonly sold for dust control and aqueous brine preparation.

The solid is highly moisture-sensitive and develops a molten ionic phase when heated under the relevant industrial process conditions. Water content and hydrolysis products are consequential to melt quality and electrolysis behavior. As a chloride raw material, it can also be used in selected chemical conversion processes requiring a dry magnesium source. The useful functions are ionic magnesium supply and participation in a molten chloride medium.

Typical Applications

• Electrolytic magnesium production: Used as a magnesium-containing feed in suitable chloride electrolysis systems. The salt supplies the magnesium ions that are converted into metal during the industrial process.
• Metallurgical chloride melts: Used as a component of selected molten-salt mixtures for metal treatment and processing. Its contribution is to the composition and behavior of the chloride medium.
• Dry magnesium chemical processing: Used as a magnesium chloride source in chemical routes where hydrated salts would introduce unwanted water. The anhydrous form supplies a defined dry salt input for the downstream conversion.
