Phosphorus trichloride

Phosphorus trichloride is a reactive phosphorus(III) chloride used as a feedstock for industrial phosphorus chemistry. It supplies a phosphorus center for conversion into phosphites and other organophosphorus intermediates. Its reactive phosphorus-chlorine bonds also provide a chemical conversion function in selected industrial synthesis routes.

The material is a clear liquid that reacts readily with moisture, so its commercial value depends on controlled dry processing. It is a starting chemical rather than a finished antioxidant, lubricant additive or agricultural formulation. Downstream conversion determines the organic groups attached to phosphorus and the resulting application. Phosphorus trichloride is chemically distinct from phosphoryl chloride and phosphorus pentachloride.

Typical Applications

• Phosphite stabilizer intermediates: Used as a phosphorus feedstock in manufacture of phosphite compounds for polymer-stabilizer chemistry. The downstream organic structure establishes the stabilizer’s compatibility and performance in the polymer.
• Phosphonate intermediate manufacture: Used in selected routes to phosphorus-carbon-bond-containing intermediates for industrial chemical production. The converted intermediate supplies the structure required by the downstream specialty product.
• Lubricant-additive intermediate manufacture: Used upstream in selected organophosphorus additive routes. The product supplied to the lubricant blender is the converted additive, while phosphorus trichloride serves as a manufacturing feedstock.
